We treat the particle motion in Stokes’ linear edge wave along a uniformly sloping beach. By a rotation of the coordinate frame, we show that there is no particle motion in the direction orthogonal to the sloping beach, and conclude that particles have a longshore drift in the direction of wave propagation which decreases with depth and distance from the shoreline. We discuss the application of this rotated coordinate frame to higher mode (Ursell) and weakly nonlinear (Whitham) edge waves, and show that the weakly nonlinear case is identical to that for two-dimensional deep-water Stokes waves.  相似文献

The basic route and mechanism for diapedesis has not yet to be fully defined. Here we present evidence that "cell-cell separation" between endothelial cells (ECs) may provide a route for leukocyte diapedesis. We unexpectedly found that extensive interaction between peripheral blood leukocytes and ECs that were activated by TNF-α induced the opening of EC contacts and, surprisingly, resulted in cell-cell separation. This event was specific to the intercellular adhesion molecules-1 (ICAM-1)/leukocyte function-associated antigen-1 interaction, as demonstrated by the following: (1) ICAM-1 expression correlated with increased EC contraction; and (2) the blocking of ICAM-1 selectively inhibited EC separation. Thus, we suggest that "cell-cell separation" could be a mechanism for diapedesis in situations that may require massive leukocyte infiltration.  相似文献

This article was prompted by the thoughtful commentaries of Norton, Tzur, and Dreyfus. Their commentaries pointed out important ideas that were left implicit or only partially explained. The clarifications made here include how the Learning Through Activity (LTA) research program differs from related research programs, the relation of the LTA theoretical framework to scheme theory, our choice to not employ the construct of perturbation in explaining learning, and the structure of hypothetical learning trajectories. In addition, I discuss a type of mathematical concept that we have not discussed previously.  相似文献

This paper considers the negative gradient trajectories associated with the modified total squared curvature functional . The focus is on the limiting behavior as tends to zero from the positive side. It is shown that when spaces of curves exist in which some trajectories converge and others diverge. In one instance the collection of critical points splits into two subsets. As tends to zero the critical curves in the first subset tend to the critical points present when . Meanwhile, all the critical points in the second subset have lengths that tend to infinity. It is shown that this is the only way the Palais-Smale condition fails in the present context. The behavior of the second class of critical points supports the view that some of the trajectories are `dragged' all the way to `infinity'. When the curves are rescaled to have constant length the Euler figure eight emerges as a `critical point at infinity'. It is discovered that a reflectional symmetry need not be preserved along the trajectories. There are examples where the length of the curves along the same trajectory is not a monotone function of the flow-time. It is shown how to determine the elliptic modulus of the critical curves in all the standard cases. The modulus must satisfy when the space is limited to curves of fixed length and the endpoints are separated by the vector .

I investigated the questions (i) how much movement of fish between areas within a stock is required before the areas can be managed jointly instead of separately and (ii) how is the trade-off between separate and joint management affected by the spatial behavior of the fishing fleet? I addressed these questions using a simulation model of a fishery on a stock that is divided into two areas (substocks) between which fish can move. Under joint management, fleet spatial behavior is characterized by its “switching level,” or the biomass level in the currently fished area at or below which the fleet will switch to the other area. Catch levels were calculated under both separate and joint management for a range of movement rates and switching levels. I also studied the effect of differences in natural mortality rates between the two areas. When the natural mortality rates were the same for the two areas, (i) separate management resulted in higher catch than joint management, (ii) joint management only approached the catch of separate management when movement rate of fish between the two areas was very high, (iii) the difference between separate and joint management was greatest when (a) the switching level of the joint fleet was low (i.e., inertia was high) and (b) the joint fleet had a preference for one area. When natural mortality rate was different in the two areas, and (i) the joint fleet did not prefer one area, (a) separate management produced higher catches at low fish movement rates while joint management produced higher catches at high movement rates and (b) switching level had no effect on catch, and (ii) when the fleet had a preference for the area with the higher natural mortality rate, separate management resulted in higher catches than joint management, and the difference increased with increasing fish movement rate. These simulations suggest that the relative merits of separate and joint management of two areas depends on the assumptions one makes about the spatial behavior of the fishing fleet. This behavior is as important as movement of fish between the areas, which is normally assumed to be the overriding determinant of the relative merits of separate and joint management.  相似文献

In Part 1 of this paper (Ref. 1), necessary conditions for optimal open-loop strategies in differential games of pursuit-evasion type have been developed for problems which involve state variable inequality constraints and nonsmooth data. These necessary conditions lead to multipoint boundary-value problems with jump conditions. These problems can be solved very efficiently and accurately by the well-known multiple-shooting method. By this approach, optimal open-loop strategies and their associated saddle-point trajectories can be computed for the entire capture zone of the game. This also includes the computation of optimal open-loop strategies and saddle-point trajectories on the barrier of the pursuit-evasion game. The open-loop strategies provide an open-loop representation of the optimal feedback strategies. Numerical results are obtained for a special air combat scenario between one medium-range air-to-air missile and one high-performance aircraft in a vertical plane. A dynamic pressure limit for the aircraft imposes a state variable inequality constraint of the first order. Special emphasis is laid on realistic approximations of the lift, drag, and thrust of both vehicles and the atmospheric data. In particular, saddle-point trajectories on the barrier are computed and discussed. Submanifolds of the barrier which separate the initial values of the capture zone from those of the escape zone are computed for two representative launch positions of the missible. By this way, the firing range of the pursuing missile is determined and visualized.This paper is dedicated to the memory of Professor John V.
